PETER PAUL RUBENS: (1577-1640): A hugely successful, likeable artist, welcomed in royal courts - both Charles I of England and Phillip IV of Spain knighted him - he played an important diplomatic role in 17th-century European politics. He and his workshop produced an astounding number of works renowned for their Baroque exuberance and vitality that included paintings for altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, historical, mythological and allegorical subjects.

GRAHAM SUTHERLAND (1903-1980): A look at the life and work of this leading twentieth-century artist whose prolific output included abstract landscapes, penetrating portraits, printmaking, tapestry, ceramics and glass design. Sutherland also served as an official war artist in the Second World War, painting industrial scenes on the British home front.

WINSLOW HOMER (1836-1910): An American Realist artist, Homer spent a year in Paris in 1867 admiring the work of The Barbizon School, Millet and Courbet and two years in the seaside village of Cullercoats in North Tyneside, where he painted the lives of men and women whose livelihoods depended upon the sea. After the American Civil War, his subject became the everyday life of Americans in the wake of the war and abolition, with a focus on the lives of formerly enslaved African Americans.
